Handmade Paper Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC handmade paper market decreased by -0.1% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. The total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, overseas shipments of handmade paper and paperboard increased by 66% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of handmade paper and paperboard in SADC, mixing up 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the handmade paper and paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest handmade paper supplier in SADC.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2021, overseas purchases of handmade paper and paperboard were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, handmade paper imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of handmade paper and paperboard, namely South Africa, Angola and Swaziland, represented more than half of total import. Namibia (X tons) took a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (8.8%), Madagascar (6.7%) and Malawi (5%). Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest handmade paper importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Swaziland ($X), together comprising 58% of total imports. Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Madagascar and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Malawi, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
