Hard Plastic Comb Market Size in SADC

The SADC hard plastic comb market shrank to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of hard rubber or plastic combs increased by 9.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 89% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hard plastic comb exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 42%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), comprising a 6.6% share of total exports. Malawi (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hard plastic comb exports from South Africa stood at -8.0%. At the same time, Tanzania (+21.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malawi (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hard plastic comb supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -7.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+41.3% per year) and Malawi (+9.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+16.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of hard rubber or plastic combs increased by 7.2% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 198% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hard plastic comb imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of hard plastic comb imports in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together accounting for 80% of total import. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.8% share, followed by Mozambique (5.1%). Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 75% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 40%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
