Hazelnut Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the SADC hazelnut market, when its value decreased by -78.7% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, posted mild growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Hazelnut Production in SADC

In value terms, hazelnut production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 409%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Mozambique (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, comprising approx. 68% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Mozambique exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), fivefold. Namibia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 12% share.

In Mozambique, hazelnut production decreased by an average annual rate of -29.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+2.0% per year) and Namibia (+1.2% per year).

Hazelnut Exports

Exports in SADC

Hazelnut exports surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 60% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports enjoyed measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 591% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 1,054% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of hazelnuts, generating 78% of total exports. Namibia (X kg) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from South Africa stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Namibia (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+5.4 p.p.) and Namibia (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-5.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+1.1% per year) and Tanzania (-15.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 71%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Hazelnut Imports

Imports in SADC

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -86.8% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 509%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, hazelnut imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 329% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 69% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held an 8.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Seychelles (6.2%) and Tanzania (5%). Namibia (X kg) and Angola (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+53.3%), Namibia (+9.8%) and Seychelles (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +53.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-7.0%) and Angola (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+20 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8 p.p.), Namibia (+2 p.p.) and Seychelles (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania and Angola saw its share reduced by -6.3% and -19.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in SADC, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +11.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+66.4% per year) and Seychelles (+4.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 246% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate temperate growth. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
