Chicken Egg Market Size in SADC
The SADC chicken egg market stood at $X in 2022, picking up by 1.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.6% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Chicken Egg Production in SADC
In value terms, chicken egg production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 49%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of chicken egg production was South Africa (X tons), comprising approx. 58% of total volume. Moreover, chicken egg production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Zambia (X tons), with a 6.8% share.
In South Africa, chicken egg production increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+8.5% per year) and Zambia (+1.9% per year).
Chicken Egg Exports
Exports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of chicken eggs increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken egg exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of chicken eggs, comprising 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), constituting a 19% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+16.8%), Zambia (+5.3%), Namibia (+4.2%) and Swaziland (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zambia increased by +7.5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest chicken egg supplier in SADC, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+13.8% per year) and Zimbabwe (+17.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chicken egg export price increased by +62.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chicken Egg Imports
Imports in SADC
Chicken egg imports contracted slightly to X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 475% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chicken egg imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 75%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) represented the major importer of chicken eggs, constituting 35% of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (15%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (14%). The following importers - Angola (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.
Imports into Mozambique increased at an average annual rate of +22.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+27.4%), Botswana (+9.9%), Zimbabwe (+8.6%) and Swaziland (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.4% from 2012-2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-40.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+35 p.p.), Angola (+4 p.p.), Botswana (+3.7 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.4 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Swaziland and Democratic Republic of the Congo saw its share reduced by -8.1% and -10.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Swaziland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Madagascar, with a CAGR of +39.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 112%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
