The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together finishing at 98% of total export.

In 2021, approx. X tons of herbicides were imported in SADC; approximately equating the year before. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +18.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, herbicide imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +34.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of herbicides, committing 61% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Zambia (6%) and Zimbabwe (4.8%). The following importers - Malawi (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each reached a 5.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to herbicide imports into South Africa stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+16.3%), Zambia (+15.6%), Zimbabwe (+12.7%), Malawi (+10.3%) and Mozambique (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2021. Tanzania (+8.6 p.p.), Zambia (+3 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -14.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported herbicides in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +5.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+11.9% per year) and Zambia (+10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
