Hop Market Size in SADC

The SADC hop market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6.3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Hop Production in SADC

In value terms, hop production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 43%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hop production, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.

In 2022, the average hop yield in SADC stood at X tons per ha, flattening at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 2.3%. Over the period under review, the hop yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The hop harvested area amounted to X ha in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 3.5%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Hop Exports

Exports in SADC

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of hops decreased by -25.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 598%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, hop exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 492%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hops exports, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +12 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hop supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.

In South Africa, hop exports expanded at an average annual rate of +40.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -11.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 68%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+10.6%).

Hop Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, hop imports in SADC dropped to X tons, reducing by -13.9% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, hop imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of hop imports in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together resulting at 66% of total import. Namibia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +25.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hops in SADC, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, hop imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+12.3% per year) and Zambia (+21.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
