Market Size for Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in SADC

The SADC market for horse, mule and donkey meat expanded modestly to $X in 2022, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in SADC

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 20%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) remains the largest horse, mule and donkey meat producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 93% of total volume. Moreover, horse, mule and donkey meat production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Botswana (X tons), more than tenfold.

In South Africa, horse, mule and donkey meat production shrank by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+1.1% per year) and Lesotho (-10.7% per year).

In 2022, the average horse, mule and donkey meat yield in SADC was estimated at X kg per head, remaining constant against 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 3%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the horse, mule and donkey meat yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for horse, mule and donkey meat production in SADC dropped modestly to X heads, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

Exports of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of horse, mule and donkey meat exported in SADC declined to X tons, waning by -7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 154%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 192% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Namibia was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 63% of total exports. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by South Africa (14%).

Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the horse, mule and donkey meat exports, with a CAGR of +71.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Botswana (-25.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Namibia (+63 p.p.) and South Africa (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Botswana saw its share reduced by -74.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) emerged as the largest horse, mule and donkey meat supplier in SADC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Namibia amounted to +65.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+1.7% per year) and Botswana (-27.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 144%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat

Imports in SADC

In 2022, horse, mule and donkey meat imports in SADC soared to X tons, rising by 81% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 115%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Comoros (X tons) represented the major importer of horse, mule and donkey meat, generating 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 31% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Comoros increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lesotho (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Comoros and Lesotho increased by +50 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Comoros ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported horse, mule and donkey meat in SADC, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 25% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Comoros stood at +7.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-19.0% per year) and Lesotho (+24.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -15.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
