The SADC hot-rolled bearing steel bar market reduced to $X in 2022, waning by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, shipments abroad of hot-rolled bars in bearing steels decreased by -8.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after eight years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 142% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled bearing steel bar exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 217% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Namibia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), comprising a 5.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total exports.

Exports from Namibia increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+57.6%), Angola (+30.1%) and South Africa (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +57.6% from 2012-2022. Angola (+4 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Namibia saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -3.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest hot-rolled bearing steel bar supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Namibia totaled +20.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+6.8% per year) and Zambia (+40.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of hot-rolled bars in bearing steels decreased by -7.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled bearing steel bar imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zambia was the largest importer of hot-rolled bars in bearing steels in SADC, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together comprising a 32% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hot-rolled bearing steel bar imports into Zambia stood at +41.5%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+60.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +60.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-4.0%) and Angola (-24.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+64 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.5 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -69.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Zambia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hot-rolled bars in bearing steels in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Zambia stood at +35.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-1.3% per year) and Angola (-24.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hot-rolled bearing steel bar import price increased by +32.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
