Plastic Household Articles Market Size in SADC

The SADC plastic household articles market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Plastic Household Articles Production in SADC

In value terms, plastic household articles production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Plastic Household Articles Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of household articles and toilet articles of plastics decreased by -3.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 55%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household articles exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), constituting a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic household articles exports from South Africa stood at +6.6%. At the same time, Tanzania (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Tanzania increased by +13 and +7.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic household articles supplier in SADC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +1.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -14.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-0.8%).

Plastic Household Articles Imports

Imports in SADC

Plastic household articles imports declined rapidly to X tons in 2022, waning by -17.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household articles imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 28% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritius (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons), Comoros (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 56% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic household articles imports into South Africa stood at -3.0%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+8.3%), Comoros (+7.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.2%) and Mauritius (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.3% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-1.5%), Tanzania (-5.1%) and Angola (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+7.4 p.p.), Comoros (+3.4 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania, Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.4%, -6.1% and -6.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported household articles and toilet articles of plastics in SADC, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 6.7% share.

In South Africa, plastic household articles imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+3.0% per year) and Namibia (+0.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
