Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X units of hydraulic presses for working metal were exported in SADC; picking up by 5.4% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 293% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hydraulic press exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), mixing up a 5.7% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hydraulic presses for working metal exports, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+56 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-19.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hydraulic press supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +12.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-7.2%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of hydraulic presses for working metal increased by 9.9% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 124%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hydraulic press imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of hydraulic presses for working metal in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), Mozambique (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Namibia (X units), together comprising a 37% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X units), Zambia (X units) and Madagascar (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+35.8%), Mozambique (+34.9%), Madagascar (+19.6%), Zimbabwe (+16.0%), Angola (+15.8%), Tanzania (+10.5%) and Zambia (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mozambique, Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe increased by +11, +5.9, +5.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hydraulic presses for working metal in SADC, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+16.3% per year) and Angola (-3.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 129%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
