In 2022, shipments abroad of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites decreased by -10.3% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after seven years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports from South Africa stood at +7.5%. At the same time, Madagascar (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.3% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +5.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+9.8%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites were imported in SADC; which is down by -4.7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites, namely Angola, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Botswana, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mauritius ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 43% share of total imports. Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
