In 2021, the SADC non-alloy steel i-sections market increased by 42% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-alloy steel i-sections production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a deep downturn. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of i-sections of non-alloy steel exported in SADC expanded modestly to X tons, increasing by 1.9% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-alloy steel i-sections exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 79% of total exports. Angola (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (5.7%). The following exporters - Zambia (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.8% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -17.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+496.0%), Angola (+70.4%), Zambia (+24.5%) and Namibia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +496.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Angola (+10 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.7 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-19.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-alloy steel i-sections supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 6.5% share.
In South Africa, non-alloy steel i-sections exports contracted by an average annual rate of -14.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+88.6% per year) and Mozambique (+431.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 64% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-alloy steel i-sections export price increased by +93.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of i-sections of non-alloy steel were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-alloy steel i-sections imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major importer of i-sections of non-alloy steel, generating 48% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (10%), Angola (8.3%) and Zimbabwe (5.4%). The following importers - Zambia (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - each finished at a 5.8% share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of i-sections of non-alloy steel. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+28.0%), Zimbabwe (+18.0%), Madagascar (+5.6%) and Tanzania (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-5.7%) and Angola (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+4.2 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zambia (-2.2 p.p.) and Angola (-22.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported i-sections of non-alloy steel in SADC, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, non-alloy steel i-sections imports declined by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.8% per year) and Angola (-10.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
