Exports in SADC
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of imitation jewelry, when their volume increased by 25% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 40%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imitation jewellery exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 139%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to imitation jewellery exports from South Africa stood at -6.3%. At the same time, Madagascar (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +1.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Madagascar increased by +2.8 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) remains the largest imitation jewellery supplier in SADC, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritius amounted to +3.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-11.1% per year) and Madagascar (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 71% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+21.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imitation Jewellery Imports
Imports in SADC
Imitation jewellery imports rose remarkably to X tons in 2021, surging by 7.6% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imitation jewellery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 44%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 62% of total imports. Angola (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (7.2%) and Mauritius (6.5%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+32.4%) and Swaziland (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.4% from 2012-2021. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.4%), Mauritius (-5.0%) and Botswana (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Angola (+5.5 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.3 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.3 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-8.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported imitation jewelry in SADC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.6% share.
In South Africa, imitation jewellery imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+10.8% per year) and Tanzania (+5.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 36%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
