Inactive Yeast Market Size in SADC
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the SADC inactive yeast market, when its value decreased by -10.7% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Inactive Yeast Production in SADC
In value terms, inactive yeast production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +71.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms increased by 40% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, inactive yeast exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 94% of total exports. The following exporters - Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest inactive yeast supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +6.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+2.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Inactive Yeast Imports
Imports in SADC
Inactive yeast imports amounted to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 11% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -4.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, inactive yeast imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms, generating 62% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (9.8%). The following importers - Swaziland (X tons) and Comoros (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lesotho (+42.1%), Mauritius (+21.0%) and Comoros (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +42.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+24 p.p.), Lesotho (+17 p.p.) and Mauritius (+7.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Swaziland (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lesotho ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 8.3% share.
In South Africa, inactive yeast imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lesotho (+32.7% per year) and Mauritius (+22.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
