The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -41.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 639% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Swaziland amounted to $X per unit.

Angola (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Zambia (X units). All these countries together held near 27% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Comoros (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -31.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.6%) and Zimbabwe (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2021. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Comoros (-4.8%), Zambia (-6.3%) and Angola (-21.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Comoros increased by +7.5, +5.3, +4.5, +4.3, +3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported indicator panels incorporating liquid crystal devices (LCD) or light emitting diodes (LCD) in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Comoros, with a 4.3% share.

In South Africa, LCD or LED indicator panel imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+9.3% per year) and Comoros (-7.9% per year).
