The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 4.1%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of sugar, when their volume decreased by -92.9% to X units. Overall, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,207%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, sugar-manufacturing industrial machinery exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 772%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the largest exporter of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of sugar, generating 68% of total exports. Mauritius (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Zambia (12%). Tanzania (X units) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -12.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+30.8%) and Zambia (+26.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Mauritius (+16 p.p.), Zambia (+12 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-29.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest sugar-manufacturing industrial machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -9.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+21.8% per year) and Zambia (+25.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 154% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 228%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, sugar-manufacturing industrial machinery imports in SADC declined rapidly to X units, reducing by -28.1% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 1,944%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, sugar-manufacturing industrial machinery imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 1,007%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Tanzania dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), making up a 6.2% share of total imports. Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of sugar imports, with a CAGR of +62.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania increased by +81 percentage points.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of sugar in SADC, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports.

In Tanzania, sugar-manufacturing industrial machinery imports expanded at an average annual rate of +70.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+9.1% per year) and Angola (-3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 77% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
