In 2021, the SADC fruit-preparation industrial machinery market decreased by -5.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a deep setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 139%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables increased by 185% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports posted a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables exports, with a CAGR of +42.8% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+73 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest fruit-preparation industrial machinery supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, fruit-preparation industrial machinery exports increased at an average annual rate of +21.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -27.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 166% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -15.2% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X units of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables were imported in SADC; jumping by 60% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 128%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the major importer of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables, comprising 48% of total imports. Madagascar (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Zambia (7.9%), Botswana (6.1%) and Malawi (5.4%). Mozambique (X units) and Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fruit-preparation industrial machinery imports into South Africa stood at -23.5%. At the same time, Madagascar (+88.0%), Mozambique (+51.1%), Zambia (+49.7%), Botswana (+12.5%) and Tanzania (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +88.0% from 2012-2021. Malawi experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Madagascar, Zambia, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania increased by +22, +7.9, +5.7, +4.5, +3.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest fruit-preparation industrial machinery importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Madagascar ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports.

Madagascar, with a CAGR of +53.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, declining by -46.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 162% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
