In 2021, industrial robot exports in SADC soared to X units, with an increase of 24% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,110%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, industrial robot exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 612%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), achieving a 31% share of total exports. Mozambique (X units) and Zambia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of industrial robots for multiple uses. At the same time, Namibia (+38.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2021. Mozambique and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Namibia (+29 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest industrial robot supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 1% share.

In South Africa, industrial robot exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+7.1% per year) and Namibia (+58.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -31.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 285%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

Industrial robot imports surged to X units in 2021, with an increase of 77% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 128%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial robot imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 169%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the largest importer of industrial robots for multiple uses, generating 71% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), achieving a 27% share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of industrial robots for multiple uses. At the same time, Mozambique (+68.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +68.2% from 2012-2021. Mozambique (+27 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -24.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial robots for multiple uses in SADC, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 0.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +5.9%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
