Industrial Roundwood Market Size in SADC

The SADC industrial roundwood market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the market value increased by 7.5%. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Industrial Roundwood Production in SADC

In value terms, industrial roundwood production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of industrial roundwood exported in SADC rose sharply to X cubic meters, with an increase of 12% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporter of industrial roundwood in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X cubic meters, which was near 52% of total exports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Madagascar (6.5%). Mozambique (X cubic meters), Angola (X cubic meters), Tanzania (X cubic meters) and Zambia (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +52.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the largest industrial roundwood supplier in SADC, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.1% share.

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, industrial roundwood exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+15.6% per year) and Angola (+4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per cubic meter, waning by -11.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 77%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Industrial Roundwood Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of industrial roundwood imported in SADC dropped to X cubic meters, reducing by -11.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 77%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, industrial roundwood imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 37%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the eight major importers of industrial roundwood, namely Mozambique, Botswana, Mauritius, Lesotho, Madagascar, South Africa, Tanzania and Namibia, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +24.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 62% share of total imports. Tanzania, Namibia, Lesotho, Madagascar and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Madagascar, with a CAGR of +26.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
