Industrial Sewing Machine Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC industrial sewing machine market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, industrial sewing machine production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 1,144% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of industrial sewing machines exported in SADC contracted sharply to X units, which is down by -47.8% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 159%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, industrial sewing machine exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 82% of total exports. Mauritius (X units) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to industrial sewing machine exports from South Africa stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Madagascar (+34.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +34.4% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Madagascar (+4.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest industrial sewing machine supplier in SADC, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In South Africa, industrial sewing machine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+11.4% per year) and Mauritius (-5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Industrial sewing machine imports expanded to X units in 2022, growing by 3.1% against the year before. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, industrial sewing machine imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), Tanzania (X units), Madagascar (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Botswana (X units), together constituting a 45% share of total imports. Namibia (X units) and Swaziland (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of industrial sewing machines. At the same time, Swaziland (+38.5%), Mozambique (+14.9%), Botswana (+12.9%), Namibia (+7.6%), Madagascar (+7.1%), Zimbabwe (+4.0%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.5% from 2012-2022. Mozambique (+9.1 p.p.), Botswana (+3.4 p.p.), Swaziland (+2.6 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -18.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial sewing machines in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.2% share.

In South Africa, industrial sewing machine imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+8.8% per year) and Tanzania (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 54%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
