The total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 51%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of inedible fish products increased by 5.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 75%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, inedible fish products exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -27.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mauritius dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Mauritius was also the fastest-growing in terms of the inedible fish products exports, with a CAGR of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+21 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) remains the largest inedible fish products supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 7.3% share of total exports.
In Mauritius, inedible fish products exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -8.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, inedible fish products export price increased by +44.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+20.7%).

Imports in SADC
Inedible fish products imports dropped to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -12.3% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, inedible fish products imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mauritius prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 95% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.4% share of total imports.
Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of inedible fish products. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Namibia (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritius increased by +9.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inedible fish products in SADC, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 2.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritius was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+4.8% per year) and Zimbabwe (-4.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
