The SADC ink market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Ink Production in SADC
In value terms, ink production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 54%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of inks (excluding printing ink) increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ink exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of inks (excluding printing ink). At the same time, Mauritius (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +2.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ink supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.9%).
Ink Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of inks (excluding printing ink) increased by 40% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, ink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 56% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Zimbabwe (5.1%), Namibia (4.8%) and Zambia (4.8%). Swaziland (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+15.5%), Swaziland (+14.7%), Zimbabwe (+13.3%), Madagascar (+9.9%), Angola (+5.5%) and Tanzania (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-2.0%), Mozambique (-6.9%), Mauritius (-8.0%) and Botswana (-18.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+27 p.p.), Zambia (+2.8 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.6 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-3.8 p.p.), Mozambique (-3.9 p.p.), Mauritius (-6.7 p.p.) and Botswana (-16.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inks (excluding printing ink) in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +7.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+17.5% per year) and Namibia (-10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
