Exports in SADC
In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking pressure of liquids or gasses, when their volume decreased by -59.8% to X units. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, test and measurement exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the main exporter of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking pressure of liquids or gasses, constituting 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), generating a 10% share of total exports. The following exporters - Angola (X units) and Swaziland (X units) - each amounted to a 4.4% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+14.5%), Tanzania (+13.2%) and Swaziland (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tanzania (+8.4 p.p.), Angola (+1.9 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-10.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest test and measurement supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 1.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+29.6% per year) and Swaziland (+12.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 198% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a strong expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking pressure of liquids or gasses increased by 31% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, test and measurement imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), comprising an 11% share of total imports. Angola (X units) and Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to test and measurement imports into South Africa stood at -1.8%. At the same time, Tanzania (+22.6%) and Angola (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Angola increased by +2.3 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking pressure of liquids or gasses in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-4.7% per year) and Mauritius (-2.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
