The SADC dental instruments market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. In 2021, shipments abroad of instruments for dental sciences increased by 26% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports posted moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, dental instruments exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 205% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the main exporter of instruments for dental sciences, constituting 75% of total exports. Madagascar (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Mauritius (6.1%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments for dental sciences exports, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+13.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.2%) and Madagascar (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa (+63 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest dental instruments supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 0.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +17.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+21.0% per year) and Madagascar (-1.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -39.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
Dental instruments imports contracted to X units in 2021, waning by -14.8% against 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, dental instruments imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 61% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Angola (7.9%). Zambia (X units), Namibia (X units), Seychelles (X units) and Lesotho (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dental instruments imports into South Africa stood at +8.7%. At the same time, Lesotho (+58.3%) and Zimbabwe (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +58.3% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-4.6%), Seychelles (-5.5%) and Zambia (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+25 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Seychelles, Zambia and Angola saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -6.5% and -7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported instruments for dental sciences in SADC, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 3.7% share.
In South Africa, dental instruments imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+4.9% per year) and Zimbabwe (+2.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 31% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
