Exports in SADC
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of instruments used in medical sciences increased by 6.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, medical instruments exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), creating a 5.7% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to medical instruments exports from South Africa stood at -7.8%. At the same time, Zambia (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-5.9%) and Tanzania (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritius (+5.7 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -9.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest medical instruments supplier in SADC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+2.5% per year) and Tanzania (+17.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 191%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+26.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, imports of instruments used in medical sciences in SADC contracted modestly to X tons, with a decrease of -1.9% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 397%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, medical instruments imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the main importers of instruments used in medical sciences in SADC, together finishing at near 38% of total imports. Namibia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (8.7%), Zambia (8.2%), Angola (8.2%) and Zimbabwe (7.1%). Botswana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +130.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported instruments used in medical sciences in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+1.5% per year) and Tanzania (+8.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 453%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
