The SADC interchangeable tool market contracted slightly to $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. In 2021, approx. X tons of interchangeable tools for hand tools were exported in SADC; picking up by 48% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 53%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, interchangeable tool exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of interchangeable tools for hand tools. Tanzania (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +13 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest interchangeable tool supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, interchangeable tool exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-1.8%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of interchangeable tools for hand tools increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, interchangeable tool imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 68% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), generating a 5.4% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the interchangeable tools for hand tools imports, with a CAGR of +6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+4.5%), Botswana (+3.4%) and Zimbabwe (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Namibia (-2.3%), Mozambique (-3.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.6%), Zambia (-6.0%) and Angola (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +21 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported interchangeable tools for hand tools in SADC, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-1.9% per year) and Angola (-13.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
