In 2021, after eight years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft), when their volume increased by 39% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 19%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft), making up 76% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (7.3%). Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -16.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+36.8%), Mauritius (+25.6%) and Tanzania (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2021. Tanzania (+9.3 p.p.), Mauritius (+7 p.p.) and Angola (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -16% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 1.8% share.
In South Africa, exports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) contracted by an average annual rate of -4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+9.7% per year) and Angola (+32.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -28.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importer of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (9.5%), Angola (6.1%) and Namibia (4.9%). Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) imports into South Africa stood at -9.4%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.0%) and Mauritius (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2021. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Madagascar (-1.6%), Tanzania (-4.2%), Zimbabwe (-4.9%), Angola (-6.6%), Namibia (-10.8%) and Botswana (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Mauritius and Mozambique increased by +6.9, +3.2, +2.5 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 7.8% share.
In South Africa, imports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+5.8% per year) and Angola (-8.8% per year).

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
