The shipments of the one major exporters of invalid carriages not mechanically propelled, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the invalid carriages not mechanically propelled exports, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012 to 2022. Imports in SADC
In 2022, invalid carriage imports in SADC declined to X units, waning by -8.5% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 56%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, invalid carriage imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importer of invalid carriages not mechanically propelled in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Namibia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units) - each finished at a 7.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to invalid carriage imports into South Africa stood at +2.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+22.1%), Tanzania (+12.3%), Namibia (+9.5%) and Mauritius (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-12.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa and Namibia increased by +11, +9, +7.1, +7 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported invalid carriages not mechanically propelled in SADC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+10.2% per year) and Mauritius (+7.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
