In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of iron or steel flexible tubing, when their volume increased by 55% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 726% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, metal flexible tubing exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 306% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), committing a 5.3% share of total exports. Angola (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel flexible tubing exports, with a CAGR of -3.8% from 2012 to 2021. Zambia (-10.8%) and Angola (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+7.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-4.3 p.p.) and Zambia (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest metal flexible tubing supplier in SADC, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In South Africa, metal flexible tubing exports plunged by an average annual rate of -5.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+10.8% per year) and Zambia (-0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -38.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 75% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+25.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of iron or steel flexible tubing imported in SADC soared to X tons, increasing by 242% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 406%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, metal flexible tubing imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 372%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Angola prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), achieving a 6.1% share of total imports.

Angola was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel flexible tubing imports, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola increased by +26 percentage points.

In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel flexible tubing in SADC, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports.
