After four years of growth, shipments abroad of iron or steel leaf-springs and leaves decreased by -23.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron or steel leaf-spring exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. Angola (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+24.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+28 p.p.) and Angola (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest iron or steel leaf-spring supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 0.2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, iron or steel leaf-spring exports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a temperate increase. In 2022, imports of iron or steel leaf-springs and leaves in SADC rose to X tons, growing by 2.7% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.1% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, iron or steel leaf-spring imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 59% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.6%) and Madagascar (6.2%). Zimbabwe (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to iron or steel leaf-spring imports into South Africa stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+39.4%), Zimbabwe (+26.3%), Tanzania (+12.6%) and Madagascar (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +39.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+10 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.3 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.5 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.8% and -16.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel leaf-springs and leaves in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+7.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+23.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
