For the fifth year in a row, the SADC iron or steel towers market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.9% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +43.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron or steel towers production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of iron or steel towers and lattice masts, when their volume increased by 1.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron or steel towers exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of iron or steel towers and lattice masts, achieving 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), comprising a 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.8% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -12.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+99.0%), Tanzania (+11.7%) and Botswana (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +99.0% from 2012-2021. Angola (+23 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest iron or steel towers supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.2% share.

In South Africa, iron or steel towers exports declined by an average annual rate of -12.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+90.0% per year) and Tanzania (+16.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 23%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Iron Or Steel Towers And Lattice Masts

Imports in SADC

In 2021, iron or steel towers imports in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 20% compared with 2020. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron or steel towers imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the key importers of iron or steel towers and lattice masts, together generating 94% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel towers and lattice masts in SADC, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 14% share.

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, iron or steel towers imports increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+1.1% per year) and Tanzania (+16.6% per year).

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
