In 2021, shipments abroad of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 88%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fruit or nut preserves exports from South Africa stood at +12.4%. At the same time, Swaziland (+24.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Swaziland (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-6.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fruit or nut preserves supplier in SADC, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +11.8%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, purchases abroad of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the major importer of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes in SADC, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +20.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-3.2% per year) and Namibia (+6.3% per year).
