The SADC jute and jute-like fibers market surged to $X in 2022, rising by 86% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers in SADC
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +6.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Tanzania (X tons) remains the largest jute and jute-like fibers producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 70% of total volume. Moreover, jute and jute-like fibers production in Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mozambique (X tons), twofold.
In Tanzania, jute and jute-like fibers production increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Mozambique (+2.1% per year) and Madagascar (+2.3% per year).

Exports in SADC
In 2022, jute and jute-like fibers exports in SADC dropped sharply to X tons, waning by -30.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 206% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Tanzania represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), making up a 12% share of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the jute and jute-like fibers exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mozambique (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mozambique saw its share reduced by -11.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest jute and jute-like fibers supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.
In Tanzania, jute and jute-like fibers exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (-0.3% per year) and Madagascar (-11.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, jute and jute-like fibers export price increased by +10.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers
Imports in SADC
In 2022, imports of jute and jute-like fibers in SADC stood at X tons, picking up by 7.3% on 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Madagascar (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), together mixing up a 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +54.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest jute and jute-like fibers importing markets in SADC were Zimbabwe ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together accounting for 83% of total imports.
Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +38.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 48%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
