Paper Label Market Size in SADC
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the SADC paper label market, when its value increased by 9.2% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Paper Label Production in SADC
In value terms, paper label production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of labels of paper or paperboard exported in SADC rose to X tons, picking up by 3.9% on 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 37%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper label exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), making up a 6.3% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2012 to 2021. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mauritius (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper label supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
In South Africa, paper label exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+6.3% per year) and Mauritius (-5.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Paper Label Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, paper label imports in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 25% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, paper label imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mozambique represented the key importer of labels of paper or paperboard in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 28% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons), together committing a 55% share of total imports.
Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the labels of paper or paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+18.2%), Tanzania (+9.0%), Zambia (+8.0%), South Africa (+7.7%), Botswana (+7.0%), Swaziland (+4.4%), Lesotho (+1.4%) and Namibia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Mozambique (+20 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.4 p.p.), Malawi (+3.1 p.p.), South Africa (+2.6 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-1.8 p.p.) and Lesotho (-2.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 33% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 0.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
