Laser Market Size in SADC
After two years of growth, the SADC laser market decreased by -5.6% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, posted a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Laser Production in SADC
In value terms, laser production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 873%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Laser Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2021, shipments abroad of lasers, other than laser diodes was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, faced a dramatic descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 1,146%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, laser exports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 207%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the key exporter of lasers, other than laser diodes, achieving 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X units) and Angola (X units), together committing a 31% share of total exports. Namibia (X units), Zambia (X units), Botswana (X units) and Madagascar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laser exports from South Africa stood at -54.2%. At the same time, Lesotho (+133.9%), Madagascar (+36.5%), Zambia (+23.7%), Angola (+13.8%), Botswana (+3.2%) and Namibia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +133.9% from 2012-2021. Lesotho (+19 p.p.), Angola (+12 p.p.), Namibia (+3.7 p.p.), Zambia (+3.5 p.p.), Botswana (+2.1 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -45.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest laser supplier in SADC, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 4.5% share.
In South Africa, laser exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+18.6% per year) and Lesotho (+115.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -86% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 32,450%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+114.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Laser Imports
Imports in SADC
Laser imports surged to X units in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, faced a precipitous decrease. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, laser imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of lasers, other than laser diodes, namely Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola and South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Namibia (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (9.8%). The following importers - Tanzania (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - each amounted to a 4.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +24.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lasers, other than laser diodes in SADC, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 2.7% share.
In South Africa, laser imports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.5% per year) and Namibia (+14.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 2,103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
