Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of lauric acid and other acids, their salts and esters soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 66% of total imports. At the same time, Tanzania (+39.2%), Mauritius (+33.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+30.6%), Namibia (+22.1%), Zambia (+21.2%) and Angola (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +39.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Mauritius and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +9.4, +7.3 and +7.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
