In 2021, shipments abroad of leather of bovine and equine animals increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. Malawi (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of leather of bovine and equine animals. At the same time, Malawi (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+18 p.p.) and Malawi (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bovine and equine leather supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +2.0%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi stood at $X per ton.

In 2021, overseas purchases of leather of bovine and equine animals increased by 50% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Seychelles (+89.0%), Zimbabwe (+8.5%) and Madagascar (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +89.0% from 2012-2021. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Seychelles (+2.8 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.6 p.p.), Madagascar (+1.8 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-8.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather of bovine and equine animals in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -9.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (-2.3% per year) and Madagascar (+2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
