There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania totaled $X per ton.

Leek Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, leek imports in SADC fell markedly to X tons, declining by -15.7% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leek imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Botswana (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) represented the key importers of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in SADC, together comprising 41% of total imports. Namibia (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (11%), Seychelles (8.6%) and Angola (7.7%). Botswana, Angola, Zambia, Mauritius, Madagascar, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +30.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
