Lemon And Lime Market Size in SADC

The SADC lemon and lime market reduced dramatically to $X in 2022, waning by -26.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -35.3% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lemon and lime production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) remains the largest lemon and lime producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 92% of total volume. It was followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in South Africa amounted to +10.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Zimbabwe (+1.0% per year) and Malawi (+2.2% per year).

The average lemon and lime yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lemons and limes production in SADC reduced modestly to X ha, leveling off at 2021 figures. The total harvested area indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lemon and lime harvested area increased by +83.8% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lemon and lime production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in SADC

For the sixth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of lemons and limes, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 31%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 76%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of lemons and limes, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lemons and limes exports, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest lemon and lime supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -0.4% per year.

Lemon And Lime Imports

Imports in SADC

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of lemons and limes decreased by -18.1% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 44%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mauritius (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the major importers of lemons and limes in 2022, resulting at near 28% and 23% of total imports, respectively. Angola (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Namibia (9.2%), Botswana (6.7%) and Swaziland (5.9%). Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lemons and limes in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mauritius amounted to +10.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+2.4% per year) and Angola (-12.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
