In 2022, shipments abroad of letter clips, letter corners of base metal was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, metal letter clip exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of letter clips, letter corners of base metal, creating 81% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lesotho (4.6%). Namibia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -13.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+82.7%) and Lesotho (+57.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +82.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+10 p.p.) and Lesotho (+4.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -16.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest metal letter clip supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -11.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+79.9% per year) and Lesotho (+54.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -10.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 49%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of letter clips, letter corners of base metal increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metal letter clip imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 73%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the key importer of letter clips, letter corners of base metal in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (8.7%) and Mozambique (6.6%). Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal letter clip imports into South Africa stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Madagascar (+9.1%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012-2022. Tanzania and Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-1.5%), Angola (-2.7%), Namibia (-6.0%), Mauritius (-7.9%) and Botswana (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+19 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-2.3 p.p.), Angola (-3.1 p.p.), Mauritius (-3.3 p.p.) and Botswana (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported letter clips, letter corners of base metal in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 6% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (-4.8% per year) and Angola (-13.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year.
