Lettuce And Chicory Market Size in SADC

The SADC lettuce and chicory market fell slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Lettuce And Chicory Production in SADC

In value terms, lettuce and chicory production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 45%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of lettuce and chicory production was South Africa (X tons), accounting for 67% of total volume. Moreover, lettuce and chicory production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), twofold. Mauritius (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 1.7% share.

In South Africa, lettuce and chicory production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.8% per year) and Mauritius (-0.8% per year).

The average lettuce and chicory yield fell modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 2% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of lettuce and chicory in SADC fell modestly to X ha, stabilizing at the year before. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 5.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lettuce and chicory production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of lettuce and chicory decreased by -22.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 22%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporter of lettuce and chicory in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), committing a 14% share of total exports. Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -9.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-7.4% per year) and Malawi (+4.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of lettuce and chicory imported in SADC reduced remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -41.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of lettuce and chicory imports in 2022 were Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together finishing at 67% of total import. Lesotho (X tons) held a 9.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Seychelles (6%) and Swaziland (5%). Botswana (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +29.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Namibia ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Seychelles, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Malawi and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +22.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 34% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory import price increased by +47.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+17.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
