The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 69%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery increased by 28% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, loading machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. Swaziland (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to loading machinery exports from South Africa stood at -9.7%. At the same time, Swaziland (+45.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Swaziland increased by +3.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest loading machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 1% share of total exports.
In South Africa, loading machinery exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.7% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Swaziland amounted to $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.6%).
Loading Machinery Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery increased by 21% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, loading machinery imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), Botswana (X units), Tanzania (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Mozambique (X units), together achieving a 47% share of total imports. Mauritius (X units) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.2%), Botswana (+7.0%), Mozambique (+5.6%), Mauritius (+3.9%) and Tanzania (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Mozambique increased by +6.2, +4.7, +3.7 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery in SADC, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-13.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
