Market Size for Lifts, Elevators, Moving Stairways and Draglines in SADC

In 2022, the SADC market for lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines decreased by -15.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -16.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Production of Lifts, Elevators, Moving Stairways and Draglines in SADC

In value terms, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines decreased by -61.9% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 446% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 50%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X units), making up a 6.1% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+21.3%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (+6.7 p.p.), Malawi (+4.4 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lift, elevator, stairway and dragline supplier in SADC, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In South Africa, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline exports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malawi (+35.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+31.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 245% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline imports in SADC declined dramatically to X units, which is down by -70.7% compared with 2021. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 402% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importer of lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 39% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Angola (X units) and Mozambique (X units), together committing a 42% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lift, elevator, stairway and dragline imports into South Africa stood at -12.1%. At the same time, Tanzania (+18.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.5%), Zimbabwe (+12.2%) and Mozambique (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2022. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +17, +6.5, +4.6, +3.2 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Angola ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 69% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +18.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 385% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a moderate expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
