The SADC linseed oil market surged to $X in 2022, growing by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Linseed Oil Production in SADC
In value terms, linseed oil production shrank rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 245% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Linseed Oil Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of linseed oil were exported in SADC; declining by -17.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 213%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, linseed oil exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 187%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporter of linseed oil in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), mixing up a 17% share of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to linseed oil exports from South Africa stood at +8.8%. At the same time, Tanzania (+68.3%) and Madagascar (+16.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +68.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (+30 p.p.) and Tanzania (+17 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest linseed oil supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Madagascar ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +89.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Linseed Oil Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, linseed oil imports in SADC soared to X tons, rising by 40% on 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, linseed oil imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 49%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (4.7%). Lesotho (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +82.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest linseed oil importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Botswana ($X), together accounting for 93% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +71.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, linseed oil import price increased by +83.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
