In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) decreased by -1.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 81%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Madagascar prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), comprising a 4.7% share of total exports.
Madagascar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Madagascar (+8.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -7.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Angola ($X) remains the largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplier in SADC, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 0.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Angola was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Madagascar stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (-4.3%).

Imports in SADC
For the eleventh consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which increased by 1.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 104%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) were the key importers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), together making up 91% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +264.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +30.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+12.4% per year) and Mauritius (+194.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
