In value terms, lithium battery production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.1%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
Lithium battery exports rose modestly to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 5% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 216%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lithium battery exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), comprising a 4.8% share of total exports. Namibia (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery exports from South Africa stood at +43.0%. At the same time, Zambia (+48.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+68 p.p.) and Zambia (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia saw its share reduced by -48.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lithium battery supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 3.3% share of total exports.
In South Africa, lithium battery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+49.8% per year) and Namibia (-18.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 161%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of lithium cells ans batteries were imported in SADC; which is down by -19.4% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, lithium battery imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) represented the main importers of lithium cells ans batteries, together creating 86% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +38.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lithium cells ans batteries in SADC, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.1% share.
In South Africa, lithium battery imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+7.1% per year) and Angola (-17.7% per year).

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
