In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the SADC filling containers machinery market, when its value increased by 4.1% to $X. In 2021, overseas shipments of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers increased by 92% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, filling containers machinery exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 52% of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units). All these countries together held approx. 44% share of total exports. Swaziland (X units) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -12.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+76.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+69.4%) and Zimbabwe (+55.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +76.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+26 p.p.), Angola (+13 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -45.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest filling containers machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 2.8% share.

In South Africa, filling containers machinery exports declined by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+82.9% per year) and Zimbabwe (+53.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, declining by -37.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, filling containers machinery imports in SADC expanded sharply to X units, surging by 13% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +16.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 73%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filling containers machinery imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tanzania (X units), distantly followed by Zambia (X units), South Africa (X units), Angola (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units) were the key importers of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers, together generating 93% of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - each recorded a 3.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +30.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 13% share.

In South Africa, filling containers machinery imports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+2.6% per year) and Angola (-14.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -11.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 38%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
