Paper Making Machinery Market Size in SADC
In 2021, the SADC paper making machinery market decreased by -5.7% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -22.3% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper making machinery production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -14.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, paper making machinery exports in SADC skyrocketed to X units, rising by 72% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper making machinery exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 196%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the key exporter of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, generating 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X units), creating a 16% share of total exports. Angola (X units), Tanzania (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Zambia (X units) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper making machinery exports from South Africa stood at -9.3%. At the same time, Swaziland (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +1.5% from 2012-2021. Tanzania and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-4.4%) and Zimbabwe (-18.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland and Tanzania increased by +9.6 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper making machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 3% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+19.7% per year) and Zimbabwe (-5.8% per year).
Paper Making Machinery Imports
Imports in SADC
For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in overseas purchases of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, which decreased by -33.8% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 158%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper making machinery imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 185%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 36% of total imports. Tanzania (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Zambia (X units) and Angola (X units). All these countries together took approx. 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Malawi (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - each recorded an 8.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Malawi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mauritius, which together accounted for a further 12%.
Zambia, with a CAGR of +38.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+31.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
