The SADC machinery for packing market rose sharply to $X in 2022, picking up by 8.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.7% against 2020 indices. Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of machinery for packing or wrapping increased by 26% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, machinery for packing exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), mixing up a 9.2% share of total exports. Namibia (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to machinery for packing exports from South Africa stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Tanzania (+40.4%) and Namibia (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +40.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tanzania (+9 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest machinery for packing supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

In South Africa, machinery for packing exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+17.8% per year) and Namibia (+4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 71%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Machinery For Packing Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of machinery for packing or wrapping was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, machinery for packing imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 51%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 43% of total imports. Angola (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 21% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.8%), Zimbabwe (6%) and Tanzania (4.9%). Zambia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to machinery for packing imports into South Africa stood at -9.3%. At the same time, Angola (+12.7%), Zambia (+8.4%), Mozambique (+5.4%), Zimbabwe (+4.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.7%) and Tanzania (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Angola (+16 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.6 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.2 p.p.), Zambia (+3.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-35.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for packing or wrapping in SADC, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -4.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+11.4% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
