In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the SADC feedstuff preparing machinery market, when its value increased by 2% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, feedstuff preparing machinery production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -14.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, exports of machinery for preparing animal feedstuffs in SADC skyrocketed to X units, with an increase of 24% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, feedstuff preparing machinery exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 89% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), comprising a 5.5% share of total exports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for preparing animal feedstuffs exports, with a CAGR of -6.1% from 2012 to 2021. Mozambique (-24.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+21 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mozambique (-22.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest feedstuff preparing machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +4.1%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique amounted to $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.9%).
Feedstuff Preparing Machinery Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, purchases abroad of machinery for preparing animal feedstuffs increased by 0.2% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, feedstuff preparing machinery imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 45% of total imports. Botswana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Zimbabwe (11%), Angola (10%), Zambia (8.6%) and Tanzania (5.1%). Namibia (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to feedstuff preparing machinery imports into South Africa stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Angola (+33.3%), Botswana (+18.9%), Zimbabwe (+17.1%) and Tanzania (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-6.0%) and Zambia (-6.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Angola (+9.6 p.p.), Botswana (+9.5 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+8.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia, Zambia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -6.4% and -12.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for preparing animal feedstuffs in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, feedstuff preparing machinery imports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+15.3% per year) and Angola (+31.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
